What Moves the Price
- First cost versus maintenance cost. Sealing a deck is either weekends of your time or a recurring contractor bill.
- Sun exposure. A south-facing deck in full Upstate sun is harder on wood finishes and on cheap composites alike.
- How long you plan to stay. Composite pays back over years, not months.
- Appearance preference — real wood grain versus consistent colour with no knots or splinters.
- Barefoot use. Dark composite gets hot in direct summer sun; lighter boards and shade mitigate it.
How each holds up here
Pressure-treated pine. Structurally excellent and inexpensive. Left unsealed in Upstate humidity and sun it greys, checks and can splinter; maintained, it looks good for many years. Boards are replaceable individually, which is a genuine advantage.
